Small but oh so beautiful. The town of Untertauern in Salzburger Land had 485 inhabitants on 1st January 2013. Its setting is superb, for Untertauern is situated directly at the northern side of the Radstädter Tauernpass, at some 1009 metres altitude. Untertauern is itself an ancient settlement. Even at the time of the Romans there was a posting house there, since Untertauern was located on an important road, which even existed back then, across the Radstädter Tauern. There is evidence showing that the first hotel in Untertauern was there in the 14th century.
Untertauern, a winter paradise
In terms of skiing you can pick from an embarrassment of riches in Untertauern. The Obertauern ski area and the ski area of Radsadt are very close by and are accessible in 10 minutes via the free ski bus. Obertauern is world-renown for its snow-assuredness. Cross-country skiers will discover unlimited cross-country fun on the Gnadenalm, which has 15 kilometres of prepared cross-country slopes and on the 110 kilometre Tauern slope in Radstadt. There is also a range of leisure activities on offer – an illuminated toboggan run, horse-drawn carriage rides, curling, taking photos in the game enclosure and romantic walks. This means that Untertauern is itself also an interesting alternative to the mountain town of Obertauern. In terms of hotels and guesthouse, Untertauern really doesn’t hide its light under a bushel.
